HISTORY OF THE THE CAMPAIGN TO DATE

NEWIt's not over yet - the Campaign continues

FACILITIES CO-LOCATION

The Rudd Government has announced the National Archives of Australia will maintain face-to-face services in Hobart.

“Australia’s National Archives play a vital role in keeping the political, social andcultural history of Australia alive,” the Minister with responsibility for the National Archives, Senator Joe Ludwig said.“The Rudd Government has listened to community concerns, and the NationalArchives will maintain a local presence in each state and territory.”

While there will be some savings through co-locations - and there's now sufficient motivation to make that happen - these are unlikely to be enough to meet the budget (MYEFO) cuts that were announced in November. The detail of the proposal needs to be examined carefully. A more positive approach would be a radical rethink and consultation widely with stakeholders about what future directions NAA will take.

UPDATE ON PETITION AND FURTHER ACTION

A petition was tabled at the House of Representatives on Monday 8 February 2010. The Minister now has 90 days to respond to the House about the matter. A copy of the petition can be viewed at the followig link:  Pp.82) petition to House of Reps asking the House to instruct NAA to reverse the office closures decision and provide funds for their ongoing viability   http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;query=Id%3A%22chamber%2Fhansardr%2F2010-02-08%2F0100%22

Concerned History Council members and groups who wish to further this protest need to marshall their arguments against the costs, the digitisation "solution" and the inequity. Please write to the PM, copy to the Minister, complain about the lack of response if you have written before, and copy to MPs especially the ones who stood up during the debate in the House and the Senate. Letters do not have to be long or written in legalese but it is preferable that they be sent by email and by post.

Thousands Protest Closing

Response from Director dated 22 December 2009

Prime Minister and Cabinet Response on Archive Closing

By now many members will be aware of news of the planned closure of the National Archives offices in Darwin, Hobart and Adelaide over the next two and a half years. This disadvantage researchers in those areas, and may cause distress to postgraduate research students in those centres. In addition, the planned removal of Northern Territory documents to Sydney will effectively deprive local Aboriginal communities of access to documents which concern them. This matter is of serious concern. Members can express their concerns by e-mailing the Director of the National Archives, Ross Gibbs at this address:    ross.gibbs@naa.gov.au
