MODEL RESOLUTION FOR PEAK BODIES AND CONCERNED CITIZENS:
This meeting of ... members in [state] expresses its dismay / concern / opposition to the decision of the National Archives of
Australia to close the regional offices in
Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart.
It is our view:that this decision disadvantages the people in the poorest states and territory and especially denies access to
the indigenous people who are part of the Stolen Generation attempting to trace their families; and that it repudiates the Service Charter
of the National Archives of Australia to the many Commonwealth offices in South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
We consider that it is inappropriate and unreasonable to attempt to impose the burden of preserving Commonwealth records and
providing access to them on the state archives and cultural institutions of South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory with their
far more limited resources than the Commonwealth.
We call on the Rudd government to uphold its promise of greater openness and accountability and fund the National Archives of
Australia adequately so this decision is wholly reversed.
