John’s new book extensively uses original photographs and posters to allow our imaginations to appreciate how over 400,000 Australians went to war 100 years ago in the “War to end all wars.”
Although cameras were banned in many situations, there is ample photographic evidence of how Australians were recruited, trained, embarked and convoyed across the oceans. And, propaganda posters played a key role in promoting morale and ‘moral’ behaviour.
Background: John Dowson has written five books on Fremantle and one on Albany. He has been a history and English teacher all his life, in Perth, Sydney, the USA, UK, and France. He has lived in the West End of Fremantle near the National Hotel for 24 years.
